ok - I declare the VoIP wars are on!!!!
Gizmo has come a hell of a long way and here are the "small things" that make it a winner
Gizmo is the underdog and always will be the underdog - go boy!
Advantages
- ability to join a 605 conference bridge for free!
- free 775 area call in number (still need to test)
- All Calls Free promotion assuming you and your contacts stay active in the network
- full fledged case ticketing system with status, states, etc.
- Gizmo automatically informs you when others are "On the Phone" (thus you know when to IM)
- built-in recording of calls (plug in not required like Skype)
- combined contact object for VoIP user and landline, mobile phone #s
- open standards SIP based
- SOLID Mac OS X support (and assert Linux too!)
- free vmail (with SMS notifications) (not verified)
Little perks
- sound effects (boo, laugh, etc)
- built in iTunes status
- while not working now, future for Adium integration
- create groups for contacts
- multi-account support
- big-boy supported (Nokia)
- support for the Palm platform!!! (Treo)
- built-in echo cancelation (don't think Skype has this...)
- Asterisk (open source PBX) support
Stuff promoted I didn't notice
http://www.gizmoproject.com/screen-shots.php
- Map call locations
- Call topics/subjects
- Call Quality (just like your cell phone!)
Disadvantages
- can't conference in a landline/mobile # (use case: when meeting attendees don't show up and you need to patch them in wherever they are!!)
- Gizmo not avail on PPC (probably for competitive reasons and to target a different market)
- vmail implementated as an attachment system (.wav) not a central system (one could argue this works great for roadwarriors who download their email)
- slow login
Enhancement Requests
- cannot use your physical keypad to dial #
